Description
Little Bluestem is a warm season, clump forming, perennial grass that absolutely thrives in our late season heat and dryness. This native grass often grows in tall grass prairies, and tolerates a wide array of soil conditions from dry rocky soils to heavy compacted clay. It grows to an average of 2-4ft tall with flowers held on slender racemes a few inches above the foliage starting in August. The foliage itself is prized for its striking blue color during active growth, which then matures into a bronzy-red through the fall and winter. For the ecological trifecta, this plant also acts as a host for various Skipper butterflies and other beneficial insects! What's not to love about this plant??
